This class focuses the triangulated relationship between artist, artwork, and audience as a nexus of meaning in sculpture, positing the field of contemporary art as an entity that is relational at its foundation. Who do we make art for? Who is our audience, real or imagined, and what difference does it make? The space of relationship is fundamentally a space of difference—a place where things meet. Readings and assignments focus on audience, site-specificity, materiality, play, public space, and monuments, drawing from Claudia Rankine, Audre Lorde, James P. Carse, Miwon Kwon, Dylan Trigg, Karen Barad, Hannah Arendt, Issa Samb, Torkwase Dyson, and Michael Warner, among others.
