Photography ART 890, Artist Writing and Artist Books
This co-taught seminar is designed to help M.F.A. students incorporate writing into their practice, find language fit to introduce their work to the wider world, and explore various techniques and historical examples of artist books and collaborative artist-run publications. Students discuss works by writers such as Chantal Akerman, Georges Perec, Ralph Ellison, Zadie Smith, and Maggie Nelson—all in service of exploring themes and techniques including description, portraiture, argument, public address, and personal narrative. Through a series of in-class prompts and take-home assignments, they also create, discuss, and refine their own writing as well as conceptualize and produce individual and collaborative publication projects.Editor details
